Joey Navarrete

Joey Navarrete was born and raised in Fontana, California. Similar to many male dancers, Joey entered the dance world later in his teenage years, beginning his formal training with Nicole Robinson at AB Miller High School when he was a sophomore. Growing up in an affectionate household, he was inspired to dance by his mother’s encouragement and his father’s love of music and playing of the accordion. A driven and ambitious individual, Joey loves the athleticism dance provides for him, which is reflected in his passionate and aggressive approach to movement. The faculty of California State University, Long Beach continues to provide a sizeable pool of information towards Joey’s dance education, contributing to him becoming a well-rounded artist. At CSULB, Joey studies modern dance, ballet, and jazz techniques, as well as subjects such as lighting design, costume design, composition, and movement analysis, all requirements for the Dance BFA program. Joey has been honored by the CSULB Department of Dance and the College of the Arts during the past three years with the Betty DuPont Scholarship, the Lana Alper Scholarship, the Bergeron Scholarship for Distinction in the Arts, and the Susan McLain Scholarship. In 2012, Joey represented CSULB at the American College Dance Festival Association’s Baja Region conference both as a choreographer and as a performer. His performance garnered an invitation to Washington, D.C. as a performer at the National College Dance Festival in Keith Johnson’s Dreaming Op.15 No. 3. Later that year, Joey danced in a featured role in the West Coast premiere of choreographer Bill T. Jones’ Reading, Mercy and the Artificial Nigger. As a choreographer, Joey enjoys creating meaningful and interesting works that inspire and captivate human emotion inspired by his greatest passions. Ultimately, Joey hopes to join a professional modern dance company after completing his rigorous college journey, and hopes to dance in various areas of the world such as Asia, Europe, and South America.
